A Study on the Effects of Various Symptoms on the Psychological Function and Prognosis in Schizophrenia


Abstract
This study was attempted to grasp for the correlation between followings of neurotic symptoms, pure psychotic symptoms, other psychotic symptoms, psychological impairment, negative symptoms, need and availability for short-term treatment and management, long-term prognosis, short-term prognosis and personality function, and the effects of present state i.e., neurotic symptoms, pure psychotic symptoms and other psychotic symptoms on the psychological impairment, negative symptoms, need ana availability for short-term treatment and management systematically and objectively.
102 schizophrenic patients (58 males, 44 females) on Screening Schedule were applied Present State Examination, Psychological Impairment Rating Schedule, Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms and Diagnostic and Prognostic Schedule.
The analysis was tried by SPSS/PC^(+) using Pearson¢¥s correlation and simple and multiple regression based on the scores of each variables.
The results were summarised as follows;
1. In the correlation between each variable.
¡¤ There is a high correlation between other psychotic symptoms and psychological impairment, and psychological impairment and personality function.
¡¤ There is definite correlation between neurotic symptoms and pure psychotic symptoms, other psychotic symptoms and negative symptoms¡¤short-term prognosis and personality function, psychological impairment and negative symptoms and short-term prognosis, negative symptoms and short-term prognosis and personality function, long-term prognosis and short-term prognosis, and short-term prognosis and personality function.
¡¤ There is a inverse correlation between psychological impairment and need and availability for short-term treatment ana management, and need and availability for short-term treatment and management and short-term prognosis and personality function.
2. In the analysis of simple and multiple regression of present state (neurotic symptoms, pure psychotic symptoms and other psychotic symptoms) on each variable.
¡¤ Other psychotic symptoms hays very significant influence on the psychological impairment, short-term prognosis and personality function (p<0.001), marked significant influence on the negative symptoms (p<0.005) and significant influence on the long-term prognosis (p<0.05).
¡¤ Pure psychotic symptoms have very significant influence on the need and availability for short-term treatment and management (p<0.001).
